IDEAS FROM THE EDGE
± 3 RELIGION
Yup we get it...you're one of the millions of nice people, living life according to an intangible spirit. The creator of everything in the universe. Although "he" has no physical or visual form or voice, somehow he managed to put his rules and philosophy on how to live life into a book, which strangely has since been edited by some men.
The creator is full of love for mankind, however anyone who does not obey and devote themselves to the philosophy within this latest book, will be erased from the earth, and will burn in the fires of hell for eternity!
Don't despair, you will receive glorious rewards for your devotion; not now of course, when you die.
Rewards such as: A heavenly place of infinite peace and comfort. Many virgins. Escaping the gruelling task of reincarnation or reaching Nirvana
But wait, there's a massive complication...there are many creator's, each with their own book, worse still they all claim to be the 'absolute truth". Its like entering Pandora's cave! As they contradict one another, on small points…are we supposed to remove our hat or put one on when entering a house of worship? Is it incorrect to eat cow or pig? All the way up to the big issues…are there no gods, one god or many gods?
This abundance of theologies sent people a bit bonkers, leading to the torturing of children, mass killings and hundreds of wars, as each cult pushes their particular creators doctrine. Its brought out the darkest side of humanity and caused a stratospthic amount of suffering. Sadly it continues as you read these words
Faith based religions have many positive aspects, however they're filled with old notions and customs, which cannot be justified in modern world thinking. Today we are more informed, have a greater understanding, knowledge and intellect about how the universe works. We are no longer desperate for salvation, exemplified in falling church attendances over the past two decades (see ideas ±8). Faith is certainly not what it used to be...
So here's an idea...lets remove religion out of the mainstream!
Now removing religion from society does not mean you have to stop being religious. If your faith brings something into your life, gives you comfort or spiritually quenches your spiritual thirst. That's wonderful. No need to un-follow your dainty, cease worshipping or abandon any of those feelings.
It would just be non-compulsory, not taught in schools, as a republic does (vive la France!). It would be treated as history. So you arrive at religion in your own time, then decide if you wish to follow it, instead of religion choosing you at birth!
This would allow people to find paths suited to their ambitions. Why should a Muslim, Christian, Jew or Hindu be imprisoned and confined within ancient dogma, while technology and knowledge is advancing at such lighting pace, surly this situation cannot be beneficial for their future generations
Leaders would be free to make socially responsible decisions. Instead of having to appease the leaders of their countries faith. Governments could make decisions based on the best course of action for its people, rather then making policy which also adheres to out-of-date dogma
Mainstream religions have not evolved and continue to cause complex problems. Two major benefits of removing religion are firstly, disputes between nations or communities over belief systems would be irrelevant. Secondly, religion holds extremely antiquated views about woman, gay people, sex and how we should live a moral life. These may have seemed relevant thousands of years ago, but come on...frankly its obsolete here in the 21st century
Religions wield huge amounts power, not to mention amassing massive amount of wealth. While they may claim to be acting upon the word of a God, they are trading like multi-national corporations! What indeed would Jesus, Mohammed, Abraham or your God say about how their faith is behaving these days?
Another important factor for removing religion from the mainstream, is we humans process a fantastic talent for deceiving ourselves, over the past few centuries we have debunked ourselves many times - with this in mind, the most logical path forward is for us to evolve our capacity to think for ourselves, to use reason and evidence when making decisions, thereby making it relevant to the real situations of our time.
The 21st century is well under way, we cannot continue living according to rules created thousands of years ago.
Its time to move on people...
So what do you say...For or Against?
Religions contradict one another, on small points…are we supposed to remove our hat or put one on when entering a house of worship? Is it incorrect to eat cow or pig? All the way to the big issues…are there no gods, one god or many gods?
Religion used to explain things we didn't understand, such as the whether, sickness, crop harvest - once upon a time religion told us killing your own child could change those things! Since those barbaric days, our understanding of the cosmos and how our planet works has quantum leaped forward, due to research, experience and evidence.
Ok how about I tell you there is the most amazing car, it can fly, go underwater. It never breaks down or gets old. When you are sick it heals you, when you are hungry it feeds you and when you are unsure of your life's direction it will take to the right place. I cannot allow you to see it, but once you have it you will always be happy
You can have this car but not in his life, only when you die. In the meantime you must devote yourself to me and live exactly as I tell you for the rest of your time here on earth - would you be willing to do that?
